Confessions From a Life on Holiday

{September 25, 2007}   Television

In honor of it being premiere week, let’s talk about TV, and what I’m looking forward to:

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit- Tuesdays at 10
The good: Mariska Hargitay’s hair is short again. And it doesn’t look like Olivia and Elliot are going to hook up any time soon.
The bad: Highly implausible family-related storylines, and where on earth is Munch?Despite all my griping though, it’s not enough to make me go watch LA Ink in that time slot instead. Once an LnO junkie, always an LnO junkie.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation- Thursdays at 9
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- if they kill off Jorja Fox, I won’t watch anymore. I love the show, I love the Grissom/Sara romance, I love the miniature killer, but good lord if they kill her I will not watch. *holds breath* Gotta watch the premiere to find out her fate!

Law and Order: Criminal Intent- Thursdays at 10
The CI premiere is next Thursday (10/4), and I CANNOT. WAIT. I found the premiere teaser on YouTube, and oh man it was soooo good I can’t wait. As someone else in our little fandom said, if this premiere eppy (“Amends”) doesn’t get Kathryn Erbe (my hero and favorite actress) some Emmy love or some other statue, then nothing ever will. I hope they don’t kill the good rapport Goren and Eames have, but I’m so excited that I can’t even bother to think about that right now. The move to USA appears to have been good for them, because as VDO pointed out, USA is promoting the crap out of them, which they never got on NBC. I’m just gonna stop talking now because I’m *that* excited about CI.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition- Sundays at 8
I love it. Love it love it love it love it love it. Season premiere is in Hawaii. Paul and Tracy are still making googly eyes at each other. Paige still wears all kinds of pink. Ty is still loud. It’s gonna be a good year.

Honorable mentions:
Everyone knows I love my Little People, Big World. The Roloffs are the kind of family I would have loved to grow up in. TLC hasn’t listed a premiere date for that yet, but since it replays constantly I doubt I’ll miss any of it. Sadly, Crossing Jordan was cancelled in May, and Miami Ink and Army Wives are summer shows, so that’s it for my usual fall lineup.

At the Emmys, Mariska looked faaaab, Helen Mirren won (and looked fab), and Kanye and Rainn were hysterical. Generally well worth my Sunday night.

{September 23, 2007}   Life On Grad School

Now that my vocabulary describing my graduate school experience has become more G-rated, I thought I’d share a little bit.

I’ll be honest– the first two weeks were atrocious.  It was mostly intro stuff, and since I had just graduated from the same school, I knew most all of this stuff.  Thus, horridly bored.  The kids took some getting used to and so did the teachers.  But it’s a lot easier now– we’re starting to get more interesting assignments and I’m starting to get in with a group of nice kids.  It’s not a European vacation, but it’ll do for the next year and half.  And my music plate is full, even without cello lessons, because I’m in choir, the choir’s librarian, and playing two pieces on the cello with the choir and chorus.  So that’ll keep me busy there.

In library dorkdom news, my preschool storytime (1st session) has started up for the fall.  I have a relatively small group, usually 6-8 kids in the room at any time, but they’re great kids.  That was until a mom signed her child up late and he came in the second week and wrecked havoc on the group.  I suppose I’ve been very lucky that most of the kids I’ve worked with have been well-mannered kiddies from the wealthy ‘burbs, and this child blew that out of the water.  I’ve had the over-enthusastic and the easily excitable before, but this kid has a blatant disregard for authority and speaks at inappropriate times (this child is 4.)  Like I said, normally I just try to politely tell a disruptive child to calm down and then ignore them, but this kid was climbing in my guitar case and running up and grabbing my guitar strings, and I really don’t know what to do.  When his mom came to pick him up she said something flippantly about the child ”always has something to say” or something like that, but no mention of how her child was a hellion.

All you savvy adults out there… any advice?

{September 11, 2007}   Man cannot live on storytime alone

Or How I Was Reminded That I Want To Be A Librarian Still.

I was so excited when I didn’t have to work at the circulation desk anymore that it took me a couple months to realize what was missing in my library life– the “library” part of it.
I’ve been kind of out of sorts since I started library school, and I couldn’t figure out why, since I had everything I always dreamed of. Then it hit me. I was spending all my time either planning for storytime or actually implementing storytime. I wasn’t doing any of the “other” stuff involved with being a librarian– seeing the collection, helping people find stuff, interacting with other adults… in short, all of the reasons that I chose to be a librarian and not a teacher. And lo and behold, when I went back onto the circ desk for a couple hours yesterday, I felt so much better! Not to mention Diane is thrilled to have me back on, since like 3 people just quit.

And now I want to be a librarian again.

{September 6, 2007}   My life– not on holiday

In the interests of keeping my blog language-friendly, I will not discuss how I feel about school at the moment.

I will also not discuss my love life, for the same reason.

I will say this: my car is now back from the shop, and this little experience has made me all the more grateful for my friends (Thanks Joe and Aimee!)  Also thanks to Ciaran for bailing me out in choir when I didn’t have any money.  Liz’s birthday is tomorrow, and we’re going out to eat on Hertel, which should be good times.  Saturday is FALLFEST WOOO!!!!!!! and promises to be fantabulous one way or the other.  Sunday is the season premiere of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and I will be glued to the TV for the whole two hours, and I will make Aimee watch it with me.

The library continues to provide a hefty source of entertainment and fodder for the gossip mill, as well as stress.  Story time starts a week from today!!  Now that I have my car back I will spend a hefty amount of time there tomorrow making sure I’m set to go.  Any craft ideas for 3-5 year olds, anyone?
