Which in Spanish means “to return,” which I have done. Now that I am officially an MLS student and thus can spend all of my time and energy on library related stuff, I hope to keep up this blog a little better. After a time of moving and getting re-acclimated, here I am, ready to go!
I haven’t had any classes yet, so I can’t speak on those yet, but what I can speak on is my fall programming load at the library. Everything is subject to last-second change, naturally, but so far I’ve gotten Preschool Storytime at EGG, PJ Bedtime Storytimes at EGG and CFD, and a couple “Craft Friday” teen programs at EGG. (For those of you who don’t know, I work in a library system with four libraries, and therefore I get farmed out to whoever needs me.) Our director is just getting back today from being away for 3 weeks or some such like that, so we’ve been pretty much running around blind for the past month. It’ll be interesting to see what happens today, now that she’s back.
When I moved from working in one affluent suburb to another, I had no idea how different the two places would be. Even though the suburb I work in now is quite wealthy, the libraries are funded by the county in which they are located, and the county is flat broke (as a result of corrupt management a few years back.) We tend to practice guerilla librarianship, so to speak. We take what we can get, when we can get it, for as long as we can get it, and fight everyone else for anything we can get our hands on. It’s really very sad, considering how rich our patrons are, but we make it work. This is what we call Baptism by Fire, and the upshot of it is that since I learned under the worse possible conditions, any assignment after this will be a cakewalk.
Speaking of the library, I need to go there now and do a little work and planning. Get a little ahead of the game before classes pick up!
