I love TLC.
It’s a fantastic channel. When I first came to college all I watched was MTV. Now I subsist on a healthy diet of TLC with a side course of all things Law and Order. My current favorite show is “Little People, Big World.” They may be little people, but the Roloff’s are just like so many other families that I’ve come in contact with over the years, and there’s something really comforting about their all-american no-frills life.
Then of course, there’s What Not To Wear. And I mean, let’s be honest– every little (and big) girl worships Stacy London. I love her because she was a Phi Beta Kappa (like me!) majoring in philosophy out of Vassar, and now she runs around on TV going “shut up!!” Plus, the show teaches us poor average people how to dress and look pretty. And let’s not forget Clinton :-)
My favorite show on TLC used to be “While You Were Out,” where a team of handy people invaded a home for two days and completely re-did one room, but they took it off the air not too long ago, which made me super sad. Fortunately though, many of the cast members have been absorbed into other shows on TLC– Nadia Geller is on Home Made Simple, Andrew Dan-Jumbo, Jason Cameron and Leslie Segrete are all on Trading Spaces as carpenters (Leslie as a designer sometimes too) and ADJ now has his own show called “Take-Home Handyman” (no doubt a play off the success of “Take-Home Chef.”) As a result, I’m starting to watch shows on TLC that I wouldn’t have normally watched.
Like Trading Spaces.
I really wasn’t a Trading Spaces fan ever, but now that my old WYWO crew is on I’ll watch occasionally. “Occasionally” happened on Saturday, and guess who was one of the participants. KERRI STRUG. She’s still short as all get out and her voice is still tiny, and she was on Trading Spaces. It blew my little brain to bits.
THEN!!!!! After that came Property Ladder, and guess who was on it. Tanya McQueen!!!!!! (from my other all-time favorite show, Extreme Makeover Home Edition.) It was a whole other side of Tanya I’d never seen and really never wanted to see. The designers have a certain wholesome androgny on EMHE, so its sort of startling to see a slightly more “real” version of Tanya. And she has her own real estate company now, so how long ago was this silly thing taped? She’s been on EMHE for 2-3 years or so…
And that’s me talking about famous people on TV.
